TMJ Treatment

PRF Injections
for TMJ

TMJ disorder afflicts millions of people. Some experience symptoms that are merely annoying, like jaw popping or clicking; others suffer debilitating symptoms like migraines, cluster headaches and lockjaw. Many people diagnosed with TMD learn of the horror stories from TMJ surgeries and decide that the cure is worse than the disease. But there are a number of nonsurgical treatments that can help relieve the pain and discomfort related to TMJ. Platelet-rich fibrin injections administered by Dr. Krish and her staff can encourage the natural tissue healing and regeneration to accelerate the body’s natural healing process.

Use of Fibrin for Tissue Repair

A naturally occurring protein, fibrin is a major component of tissue repair and wound healing. Fibrin creates a natural scaffold around a damaged area, and other cells can adhere to and proliferate on that scaffolding structure, which can help speed the overall healing process. Fibrin has also been used as an adhesive scaffold to promote the healing of different types of cartilage. And because fibrin is biodegradable, the body decomposes the fibrin structure when it’s no longer needed.

The treatment process involves taking a sample of the patient’s blood and running it through a centrifuge to isolate platelets, fibrin and other growth factors. The concentrated, enriched material is then injected in the patient’s wound. By directing fibrin where it’s needed most, the healing process can be accelerated, stimulating tissue and cartilage growth.

Detailed PRF FAQ

First, a specialist will take a sample of your blood. It doesn't take much – just one to three vials of blood are required. While you wait, we spin your blood sample in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich fibrin. We then extract the PRF from your sample and inject it directly into the region of your temporomandibular joint that has experienced trauma. The entire process takes about an hour. No hospital stay is required, so the treatment is administered on a strict outpatient basis.
You'll probably want to eat a light meal, get in a decent workout, and drink plenty of fluids one to two hours prior to your injection. If you're using NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory medications), you may need to abstain from them for a week or so prior to your procedure, and continue to avoid using them during the course of your treatment.
It may cause some localized soreness and discomfort, which is usually treated with aspirin and heat applied directly to the injection area. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities a week or so after treatment. One advantage to PRF injections is that anticoagulants aren't needed (the treatment involves high concentrations of platelets, so clotting happens very easily).
Most patients only need one to three sessions, each spaced two to three months apart. However, depending on the severity of your TMJ disorder, more treatments may be needed. Another advantage to PRF injections is that any risks or side effects don't increase with treatment frequency, so there's no harm to additional sessions.
PRF is widely considered the next-generation treatment compared to PRP, for several reasons.
  • The extraction process is much simpler and more natural. PRP requires chemical additives to thin the blood for plasma extraction, while PRF is extracted naturally.
  • Blood flow is much higher with PRF, which can stimulate the healing process much more effectively.
  • PRF releases growth factors for a longer period of time than PRP, requiring fewer treatments to achieve therapeutic results.
